The Mozart Effect®
As featured in the April 2006 issue of Motherhood Magazine
Music for the Whole Family The Mozart Effect series of music CDs consist of the following: - Music for Babies (total 3 volumes) - Music for Children (total 4 volumes) The CD recordings are based on the best-selling books, The Mozart Effect® and The Mozart Effect for Children, by noted author, teacher and musician, Don Campbell. Each CD has its own characteristics and effects, as depicted below. How can parents maximize the benefits of The Mozart Effect at home? - Meals with Music Listen to slow Baroque or Classical music at mealtime. Televisions, talk radio, pop music and noises do not assist digestion. Healthy music signals a time to slow down, listen, eat and communicate with your family. It also creates an oasis of mild stress reduction for parents. - The Sound Check Often homes create stress through cluttering the air. Walk through the rooms of your home and listen. Is the air conditioner, the heater, the refrigerator or the freezer next to the wall of your child's room? How loud are the sounds? Our brain adapts to the sounds, but they can create stress. Be sure an infant’s bed is in a quiet part of your home. - Sound Study Habits As youngsters begin to develop their study habits, keep the time of study at the same time each day. Begin with a little quiet Mozart, Bach or children's music that does not have words. Use music as step one for study. Clear the desk, take some deep breaths and make sure the lighting is comfortable and correct. Many children with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) are distracted by every single sound. There is no need to play music throughout the study time. Let your child select the music for study. - Read to the Beat Many students improve their reading skill when a simple, steady beat is heard in the background. A metronome set to 60 to 80 beats per minute creates a wonderful structure for reading aloud. Place the metronome a few feet away from the child and keep the sound moderately low. It takes a few minutes to get familiar with this, but great schools, such as Brainworks in Carrollton, Texas, have been using this method successfully for twenty years. - Nighty Night and Quiet Time Signal the resting hour using two or three favorite albums of your child. Just let the music invite your kids to the pajamas, reading and sleeping ritual. Be sure your child’s room is quiet and not disturbed by televisions, radios or computers in a nearby room. How to play The Mozart Effect CDs Music for learning is NOT like listening to a concert. The music should be played in the background, and never too loud. For best results, turn down the bass and position the speakers at least six feet from your child's right side. If you are listening in a car, adjust the balance to accommodate for right side listening. If you are interested to learn more about The Mozart Effect®, click here. |
