Hangman...... This is one of my son's favorite games. I introduced it to him when he was 6 years old. Most of us would have played the game, Hangman, when we were young. You think of a word or phrase puzzle for the player to solve. The total number of letters in the word and an initial clue is usually provided at the start of the game (you can give more clues as the game proceeds). The player can suggest a letter or an answer to the puzzle at any one time. If the letter suggested is part of the word, it is then placed in the correct position(s). If the suggested letter or answer is not correct, the player is one step nearer to be "hanged". I find this game a great way to learn English using word recognition. Your child may not be able to spell a word correctly, but he will most probably recognize a word he knows. His reading skill will also improve through this game as he knows more words and their meanings. Children learn very fast, especially through games. Start off with something easy, words that your child already knows. This way he will get motivated when he gets it correct after a few rounds. A child may play this game by random letter suggestion (no logical thinking involved) when first introduced to it. Once he gets more accustomed to the way the game goes, you can slowly guide him to put more logical thinking into the game (e.g. you can tell him most words have at least a vowel, so he can start off with vowels). After a few rounds, you will be surprised how good he can get. Slowly increase the level of difficulty as he gets better. Make it fun to play, a family activity as well. Let him suggest a puzzle to test you instead to increase his involvement. This will make a good game while traveling since you only need a pencil and paper to get started. |
