Flashcards......

I am a firm believer of right brain training.  The majority of the brain is developed by the time a child is 6 years old.  Hence right brain training should be started as early as possible, preferably when your child is a few months old.  You can read more about my personal experience in right brain training under the "Little Experiences".

Flashcards is one good way of right brain training.  The cards should be flashed to the child as fast as possible (if you can keep it at around 1 second per card, that will be great!).  Read aloud the content of the card to the child as the card is being flashed to him.  You can flash anything to the child, the sky is the limit!  Do not worry that your child will not understand.  You will be surprised how fast a child learns!

Some tips when starting your child with flashcards:

  • Start off with pictures, especially colorful ones.  Bright pictures will capture the attention of your child as compared to words.

  • Start off with a few cards.  Slowly increases the number as the days go by if your child shows interest.

  • Make the session interesting by incorporating music (e.g. you can sing the alphabet song when flashing the Alphabet cards to him).

  • Choose the correct timing to show the cards to your child.  Do not do it just before nap time when he is cranky.

  • If your child shows no interest, try changing the content of the card.  If everything else fails, stop for a week, then try again.

  • Have as many variety as possible so as not to repeat the cards too often.  As I've said, the sky is the limit!

  • Make it a routine everyday.  You won't need very long, probably 10-15 minutes a day, for a long term benefit!

  • Start early!
